Article 39 has launched a collaborative campaign to end child imprisonment in England.

The campaign proposes to:

  • press for the closure of England’s child prisons
  • seek changes to law and practice so that deprivation of liberty is a measure of last resort
  • push for responsibility for detained children to be moved out of the government department that deals with adult imprisonment
  • establish a child welfare-based and human rights compliant secure model for children who cannot be looked after and supported safely in the community.
