The What Works Centre for Children’s Social Care has published a study looking at local authority variation in the rates of children in care in England and exploring how and why the numbers of children in care has changed over the years.
Analysis of the rate of children looked after per 10,000 children in English local authorities revealed: higher expenditure on children in need and lower proportions of low-income families in the area were associated with lower average rates of children in care in local authorities; local authorities in London showed a reduction in rates of children looked after over time, whereas those in the North West and North East showed an increase in the rate of children in care over time.
