should grandparents receive financial help when a child is placed whilst waiting on kinship assessment?

Providing the child is a “Looked After Child” the Grandparents should receive Fostering Allowances at no less than the rate paid to unrelated Foster Carers in the same Local Authority. This Allowance should be paid from the date the child was placed with the Grandparents and they could ask for it to be backdated if they have not been receiving it.

so if the child is not looked after what would be the expected financial support?

    Hi Jane

If the child is not actually in care but is known to social services it is possible that the child is being supported under section 17. This is usually termed as a child in need rather than a child in care. The child is not in care and will not have a care plan but may have a child in need plan or a protection plan. If the child has either a child in need or a child protection plan then they will have involvement by a social worker.
The local authority will look to provide financial support on a discretionary level, there is no entitlement and family income would more than likely be taken into account.

    I hope this helps

thanks it does and quite frustrating for family members who want to help but have to consider the financial implications

Will the roll out of universal credit have an impact on how family and friends carers are paid ?

that’s an interesting point and I’m not sure personally. I think it would be a very good idea for staff and professionals working in social care to have training on this and other benefits services re finances particularly in this current financial climate.
