The Department for Education has published a review of the Fostering System in England which provides a description of the current fostering system and looks at what works and where improvements could be made to improve fostering outcomes for children. The 270 page report includes sections on: issues facing the contemporary fostering system; types of foster care placements; securing the stock of placements; recruiting, retaining and supporting the foster care workforce; how foster care placements are made, kept stable and supported; the experiences of foster carers and their families; birth families of children in foster care and reunification and the experiences of and outcomes for children and young people in foster care.
The report concludes that the biggest current challenge in fostering is how to secure the future recruitment and retention of enough high-quality foster carers.
