The Department for Education and the Home Office have issued a new policy document setting out the Government’s strategy for meeting its commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of unaccompanied asylum seeking and refugee children. The strategy sets out the future actions the Government will take to address the particular issues and challenges faced by unaccompanied migrant children and the professionals and carers who work with them, including:

  • improving the skills and confidence of foster carers to care for them by providing training
  • supporting professionals caring and working with these children through revised guidance, information and resources
  • improving the information and advice available to children and families who are reunited through the Dublin Regulation
  • preventing children from going missing
  • improving initial information collection and information sharing between agencies
  • strengthening transparency and accountability through publication of data and reports to the four UK Children’s Commissioners and Parliament

Revised statutory guidance, published alongside the strategy, replaces the version issued in 2014 and details the steps that local authorities should take to plan for the provision of support for looked after children who are unaccompanied asylum seeking children, unaccompanied migrant children or child victims of modern slavery including trafficking.

Further details and links to the strategy and revised statutory guidance are provided in a press release on the Gov.uk website
