The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has published research revealing concerns over the promotion and use of cardboard baby boxes for infants to sleep in.

The article raises three issues:

  • the lack of safety standard regulations currently in place
  • paucity of observational evidence that the cardboard baby box can be used safely
  • promotion of the use of the cardboard baby box could undermine current safety messages.

The research calls for controlled studies to better understand how cardboard baby boxes are used by families and any safety implications.
