The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has published a reminder of the support it can offer to those affected by international parental abduction.
This is where a parent removes or keeps a child from their normal country of residence, without the consent of the other parent and/or in breach of a court order.
Key points include: Christmas is traditionally a time when people go abroad to visit relatives, however it is also a time when child abductions increase; international parental abduction is a criminal offence; the FCO can help in child abduction/custody cases where the child is under 16 and there is a British link within the family (including when the child is a dual national).
