The UK Chief Medical Officers (CMO) have published a commentary on research carried out by University College London (UCL) investigating a range of screen-based activities and their relationship with children and young people’s mental health.

The research maps 82 reviews published between 2007 and 2018, covering a range of screen-based activities including social media; cyberbullying; screen time; problematic internet use; sexting; and smartphone use. Advice for parents and carers on children and young people’s screen–based activity includes: agree boundaries around online behaviours and time spent using screens; leave phones outside the bedroom to ensure children have good quality sleep; and have screen free mealtimes.
