An article in The Guardian reports that Sir James Munby, president of high court’s family division, has issued an emergency statement following the rise in the number of care applications stating that the family court service in England and Wales is facing a “clear and imminent crisis”. Writing in September’s View from the President of the Family Division Sir James points out that there has been a 26% increase in applications over the 5 year period 2009-10 to 2014-15, and that 2015-16 has seen a 14% increase over the previous year. The statement looks at possible causes for the increase, and suggests topics for further research as well as the need to explore the extent to which short‐term drivers affect the figures.
