The Department for Education (DfE) has published findings from a study of local authority child and family social workers in England. Findings from qualitative interviews with 25 social workers in five local authorities and survey responses from 5,621 social workers in 95 local authorities show that: 46% of social workers were mainly motivated to enter the profession for altruistic reasons, 74% found their job satisfying, 51% felt stressed by their job and 51% felt their overall workload was too high.
Recommendations include better support for the transition out of the assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE) into experienced practitioner roles to support retention and develop resilience.
