SGO granny

Minister for Children and Families, Edward Timpson MP pays tribute to the many families who act as special guardians to provide children with a safe and stable home.

Ten years on from the 2005 legislation, however, changes in the use of SGOs have led professionals to be concerned that some special guardians may not always be assessed or supported in a way that puts children’s long term welfare first. For this reason, Edward Timpson MP initiated the review.

The results of the review reflect extensive discussion with a wide range of interested parties, including sector experts, children and special guardians. The evidence provides a clear rationale for creating a stronger, more robust assessment framework for potential special guardians.

The report gives details of the regulatory changes the government intends to take to improve the legislative framework and bring greater consistency to local practice, for example to improve the support to special guardians and children.
