Become has published a report looking at how children in care and young care leavers think other people, including teachers and social workers, think about care. 170 children and young people in care, and care leavers across England and Wales participated on an online survey or attended a focus group which found that 50% of children in care and 51% of care leavers agreed with the statement “people think that it is children’s fault that they are in care”; 35% said that they think social workers think children in care are not as clever as other children; only 24% of those taking part in the survey felt that teachers understood what being in care was like.
